Research Topics
The Research Topics are the central topics around which the science encompassed by Baltic Earth revolves. These topics reflect current issues which scientists feel have a strong relevance for the scope and vision of Baltic Earth. Over time, new topics may be added and old ones discontinued as societal and research priorities change and new compelling issues attract the interest of scientists. Review and possible revision of challenge topics in broad discussion among the scientific community of Baltic Earth will occur in conjunction with the biennial science conference, topical workshops, assessments and other activities. Dedicated Working Groups form the working level of the Research Topics.
Baltic Earth 2.0 aims to frame research on issues of fundamental importance for the science-based management of the Baltic Sea region’s environment. It builds directly on the scientific foundations established during the programme’s first phase, while responding to advances in Earth system science and to evolving societal and environmental challenges in the Baltic Sea region. In Baltic Earth 2.0, the former Grand Challenges framework has been replaced by a set of Research Topics in order to better reflect the maturity of the programme, the need for greater thematic clarity, and the increasingly interdisciplinary and solutions-oriented character of Baltic Earth activities.
