Submit an abstract in the Baltic Earth Session at EGU2024 in Vienna, 14 - 19 April 2024: Human and other drivers of change: Impacts and interlinkages in marginal seas and their coastal regions!

Abstract Submission Deadline: 10 January 2024

This session fills a gap that we had observed in previous conferences: A session that puts climate change and other human drivers into perspective and investigates interlinkages in coastal environments.

Human and other drivers of change: Impacts and interlinkages in marginal seas and their coastal regions

Convener: Marcus Reckermann
Co-Convener: Ute Daewel, Helena Filipsson, Eva Ehrnstén (ECS), H. E. Markus Meier

Marginal seas and their coasts constitute regions of the ocean where natural and human drivers of global change interact in a particular way. The heavy human uses for food and energy production and transport exert ever-increasing human pressures on these regions, in addition to the regional effects of climate change. Many studies have shown systematic changes in coastal areas because of these human uses, but the interrelations of these human-induced non-climatic changes with changes caused by climate change yet need be explored.

This session invites contributions focusing on the connections and interrelations between climate change and one or more other drivers of environmental change, be it natural or human-induced, in different marginal seas and coastal regions over the world. Observational and modelling studies describing processes and their interrelations in the atmosphere, in marine and freshwater ecosystems and biogeochemistry, coastal and terrestrial ecosystems, as well as human systems are welcome. In particular, studies on socio-economic drivers like atmospheric pollution and aerosols, coastal land use (infrastructure, urbanization, agriculture, etc.), fisheries, aquaculture, water pollution, coastal management, offshore and coastal infrastructure, shipping, recreation and their interlinkages among each other and with climate change, are welcome.

The aim of this session is to provide an interdisciplinary overview over the current state of knowledge of this complicated interplay of different drivers, in different marginal seas and coastal regions all over the world.

Abstract submission deadline: Wednesday, 10 January 2024, 13:00 CET
